I also do not like the meat production and meat buying business at all but at least the meat is not displayed in the store itself.
Democracy does work that way: the majority wins….
What I find amazing indeed is that so few people voted (out of 5000 or even 6000 members less than 500 bothered to vote)!
I am not happy about the development but all the good aspects of our FoodCoop still far outweigh this negative one.
And I still think that if one eats meat one should at least care about where it is coming from and what kind of life quality the animals had before they had to go to the slaughterhouse – in that regard the buyer’s club is probably a better choice than many other available ones.
I am delighted that the majority voted in favor of buying meat; it’s very difficult to find unadulterated, chemical-free, hormone-free meat. Now there will be access to this product in the Willimantic area.
I’m very saddened by this vote and the way it was conducted.
Misinformation was passed down by a boardmember through a blog post proposed to discuss the issue (http://willimanticfood.coop/to-sell-or-not-to-sell-meat/), and by not having a more visible discussion of the actual issue, voter interest was diminished.
Bummer – One thing I have always loved about the Coop is that it was free of the big bad dead animal vibe!!!
Sorry to hear that this may change.
